BROOKLYN, N.Y.— Head coach
Michael Mordocco believes the LIU men's soccer team is back on track heading into the postseason, despite a loss in the regular-season finale.
The Sharks enjoyed the bulk of the scoring opportunities but fell to host St. Francis Brooklyn, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
As a result, LIU (9-6-1, 3-4-1 NEC) will enter the conference tournament on the road Sunday as the No. 6 seed, and again play at St. Francis Brooklyn, the No. 3 seed.
The lone goal in Thursday's match came in the 71st minute, on one of only three shots on goal faced by LIU goalkeeper
Gianluca Cersosimo all afternoon. It came from Jack Pascoe.
The Sharks forced Terriers goalkeeper Alec McLachlan to make seven saves. LIU striker
Emil Jaaskelainen hit the crossbar on a set piece in the 86th minute one the final strong chance.
LIU, once winners of seven straight matches, enters the postseason having lost four straight 1-0 decisions. The Sharks' last goal came on Oct. 9, in a 2-2 tie at Howard, when Jaaskelainen scored the equalizer in the 81st minute.
Still, Mordocco liked what he saw from the Sharks in the regular-season finale and encouraged his team to be proud of its effort.
"We didn't get a result, but we're back," he said.
