The LIU women's basketball team played its first home game of the 2022-23 season against NJIT and it was a thriller.
The Sharks and Highlanders put on a show in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter with the game tied at 46.
LIU battled hard, but it would be NJIT who pulled away in the final minute of the game to secure a 57-50 win.
"We played hard, especially in the first half. We moved the ball well in transition," said head coach
Rene Haynes, after taking a 33-24 lead into the half.
Iris Mbulito had the hot hand for the Sharks, the senior scored a team-high 13 points.Â
Emaia O'Brien andÂ
Cristina Bermejo each scored eight points in the Sharks' first home game inside the Steinberg Wellness Center this season.
LIU hits the road for a two-game road trip in California. The Sharks play at UC Irvine on Friday, followed by a matchup against UC Riverside on Saturday.
"We are excited to get back to work and play 80 minutes against two quality teams. We're going to reset after tonight and focus on the next two games," said Haynes.Â
