PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — The LIU men's tennis team was forced to move indoors for its first dual match of the season due to inclement weather. The Sharks then suffered a heartbreaker against Quinnipiac at Sportime Port Washington.
The Bobcats clinched an eventual 4-3 victory after Csanad Nyaradi won at fifth singles.
Earlier, LIU had claimed the doubles point thanks to wins by the tandems of Philip Hible and
Arthur Voiseux and
Sergio Fernandez Romera and
Ales D'Anna.
LIU then started singles action quickly, with D'Anna winning 6-1, 6-0 at second singles.
Akhil Indrabalan picked up the Sharks' other win with a 6-3, 6-4 win at sixth singles.
Both
Philip Hilble at first singles and
Danila Ishchanka at fourth singles suffered heartbreakers. Each split the first two sets with his Quinnipiac opponents, then lost 10-6 in a tiebreaker.
"The guys came out very strong in the doubles and the work we have done on that side showed," associate head coach
Pavlos Stephanides said. "Going in to the singles, we kept the momentum going and went up a set on most courts. However, Quinnipiac improved, made adjustments and we lost our calm and confidence.
"This is definitely a tough loss, but it gives us things to work on — especially on the mental and tactical pieces of our game."
