NEWARK, N.J. – The LIU men's tennis team crossed over the Hudson River to take on the Highlanders from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Sharks fell in a nail-biting 4-3 finish to the Highlanders on Sunday afternoon.
NJIT took the doubles point early, with wins on courts No. 2 and 3.
The Highlanders quickly added to their tally with singles wins on courts No. 3 and 4 to put the total match score at 3-0, but with a victory earned by LIU senior
Ben Brandherm on court No. 1, the Sharks were back in contention and the match score was 3-1.
Brandherm's victory was followed by two consecutive Shark's wins on courts No. 2 and 5. On court No. 2 freshman
Danila Ishchanka took down his opponent 6-4, 6-3 and on No. 5 fellow freshman
Akhilendran Indrabalan won in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, earning the point to tie the match at 3-3.
The action came down to the No. 6 singles match, where senior
Guilherme De Medeiros won his first set, but dropped the second, and put up a good fight in the third. In the end, Callo von Platen from NJIT claimed the victory for the Highlanders in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 individual win, and a 4-3 match tally.
Up next, the Sharks are hosting Sacred Heart University for their first NEC match of the season, February 11 at 12 p.m.
