Baseball Salvages Split with SHU Saturday

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – After a disappointing first game at the LIU Baseball Complex Saturday afternoon, the LIU baseball team rallied in game two for an exciting win, salvaging a split with Sacred Heart. The Pioneers won game one, 9-3, before LIU took game two, 5-3.

With the split, LIU moves to 12-9 overall this season, and 10-7 in Northeast Conference action.

GAME ONE
  • Sacred Heart would score consistently throughout the game, starting with two runs on an RBI single in the first.
  • LIU's offense came alive in the bottom of the second. With one out, Andy Camillo walked, and Collin Adams doubled to left center field to bring him to third. An RBI groundout by Giovanni Ciaccio got LIU on the board, and senior Killian Bloat gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead with his twoo-run homer over the left field fence.
  • But errors would cost LIU, as two more unearned runs came in the third, giving SHU a 4-3 lead. Another error would make it 5-3 in the fifth, before a three-run home run and an RBI single in the fifth made it 9-3.
  • Senior Jackson Svete had the loss on the mound (1-3), while Michael Andreoli pitched 4.1 strong innings of relief. Andreoli held SHU scoreless, with just three hits.

GAME TWO
  • The second game of the day saw LIU rally from behind twice to take the win. SHU would get a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Sharks answered in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore EJ Exposito had a one-out double and advanced on a throwing error. He would come home on the next at bat, when senior Christopher Wasson had an RBI single. Wasson would steal second, and came home two batters later, on Adams' RBI double to left center field, and the Sharks led, 2-1.
  • Neither team would score again until the fifth inning. SHU would score two runs on three hits, taking a 3-2 lead. But again, LIU answered in the bottom of the inning.
  • Senior Anthony Warneke had a leadoff triple, and scored on Exposito's single to right field. A sac bunt and a sac fly would bring him home, giving LIU the lead once more, 4-3. Senior Cade Biddle would make it 5-3 with his double up the middle.
  • SHU would get a runner on scoring position in the top of the eighth, but LIU's pitching staff would hold the Pioneers scoreless for the remainder of the game, icing the 5-3 win for the Sharks.
  • Mike Lazos (6-0) had the win, holding SHU hitless in 2.2 innings, while Rob Griswold got the five-out save, pitching 1.2 innings, and striking out five of the six batters he faced.

Up next, the two teams resume the series, Monday, April 26 with a single nine inning game at 2 p.m.
