WEST WINSOR, N.J. – The top-seeded LIU women's tennis team dominated in the Northeast Conference semifinals Saturday afternoon, beating No. 4 seed Mount St. Mary's, 4-0.
"The message to the team was let's make sur ewe come out strong, focused, and take nothing for granted," head coach
Jan Griga said. "I think we did exactly that today and set the right tone for tomorrow's final. We are pumped and ready for tomorrow."
The Sharks won the doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 3.
Sofiya Kuzina and
Valentina Dancenco beat the top pair, 6-3, while
Elinor Storkaas and
Bianca Compuesto won 6-3 in the 3 spot.
In tournament play, up 1-0 from doubles, LIU need to win just three singles matches to clinch the win. Kuzina did so easily at No. 1 singles, dispatching Mount's Megan Smith without dropping a set, 6-0, 6-0.
Victoria Erechtchenko was also dominant, beating Riya Mathur at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Senior
Valentina Dancenco clinched the win for the Sharks at No. 2 singles, as she beat Shirley Liang, 6-2, 6-3.
Compuesto and
Kate Jorjoliani were both one set up at Nos. 5 and 6 when the match was called.
The Sharks will take on No. 2 seed Bryant in the NEC championship match, Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
