SHARKS WIN! Women's Soccer Beats Mount St. Mary's, 2-1

EMMITSBURG, Md. - The LIU women's soccer team notched a big road win Thursday night, beating Northeast Conference opponent Mount St. Mary's, 2-1 to collect their first win of the season and the first of NEC action. With the win, the Sharks are now 1-3-1 in the NEC, while Mount moves to 2-3-0 in conference play.

The game was dead even in nearly every statistical category, including shots (14-14, with each team registering five on net) and fouls (10-10). The Sharks had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, but goalie saves proved to be the different, as Kayla DeTreux made four saves in net, and the Mount keeper made three.

All of the scoring occurred in the second half. The Sharks got on the board four and a half minutes into the the half, when Tatiana Lizarraga scored off a pass from Hikari Yamada. The give-and-go results in a shot to the upper corner that went in, and LIU led, 1-0.

The home team would tie it up 17 minutes later, in the 68th minute, scoring of a good play from a throw in, making the score 1-1. But LIU senior Sarah Borer would score the game winner in the 69th minute. After the kickoff and offensive push, Borer would collect a loose ball in the box, and fired a shot to the near post, scoring her first goal of the season, and giving the Sharks a 2-1 advantage.

DeTreux would make one more save in the match to help prevent Mount's comeback, and LIU notched its first victory of the season, 2-1.

Up next, the Sharks return home to host Merrimack, Sunday, October 10 at 11 a.m.
