Softball Finishes FAU Tournament Against Host Owls

Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – The LIU softball team capped the FAU "Strikeout Cancer" Tournament Sunday with a lost to the host Owls, 9-8. After leading for most of the game, the Sharks saw the host Owls rally to score six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the walk-off win.
 
The Sharks got on the board first in the game, when sophomore Samantha Garcia had an RBI double in the top of the first inning to make it 1-0. FAU would answer in the bottom of the inning to tie it up, and added a run in the bottom of the second to lead 2-1 after the second.
 
But LIU would answer big time in the top of the next inning. Junior Alina Castillo had a leadoff double, followed by a single from sophomore Camryn Lyman. Castillo would score on junior Kiana Cisneros's double to left field, tying it up, 2-2. Garcia was up next, and would walk to load the bases for senior Patricia Griffin. Griffin hit a hard single up the middle that would bring home two runners, putting the Sharks up, 4-2. Another run would score on a throwing error, and LIU came out of the inning with a 5-2 lead.
 
Griffin would add another run in the top of the fourth with a RBI fly out to center field that scored Castillo and made it 6-2 Sharks. FAU would score one unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but LIU padded their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Cisneros would drive in one run with an RBI triple, and Griffin would bring in her fourth RBI of the game with a single to left field that made it 8-3.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, however, the home team staged a rally. The Owls scored six runs on five hits and two walks, stealing the win on a walk-off double, 9-8.
 
SHARK BITES
  • Senior Patricia Griffin led LIU, going 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI.
  • Junior Kiana Cisners was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored, while junior Alina Castillo was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Samantha Garcia and freshman Maya Avila also had RBI for the Sharks.
  • Sophomore Elena Valenzuela had the loss on the mound for LIU.
  • Up next, the Sharks return to the Sunshine State to take part in the UCF Invitational, February 28 to March 1.
