Bouveur and McKay Score to Lead Ice Hockey to Weekend Sweep Over Saint Michael's

EAST MEADOW, N.Y.- Megan Bouveur and Saige McKay scored two minutes apart from each other in the second period as the Long Island University women's ice hockey team defeated Saint Michael's 2-0 to complete the weekend sweep over the Purple Knights. Mia McLeod also earned her first career shutout in net for the Sharks.

It was a quiet opening period as the Sharks and Purple Knights took turns getting shots off. The Sharks had a nine-to-seven shot advantage after the first period.

After killing off a 5-on-3 midway through the second period, McKay cleared the puck to Alva Johnsson who brought it into the offensive zone and connected with an open Bouveur who sent the puck past the Purple Knights' goaltender to break open the scoreless tie. Just about two minutes later, Molly Meyers gained control of the puck and passed it to Matilda af Bjur who faked out the defenders and found McKay, who was open in front of the net and sent home her second goal of the season to add to the Sharks' lead.

LIU was on the power play early in the third where they tried to add to their lead and got nine shots off. Johnsson nearly made it a three-goal game, but her shot hit the pipe. The Purple Knights had an opportunity on net with three back-to-back shots, but McLeod saved two and Erin Hinch blocked one. Midway through the third, the Sharks were on another power play, and were able to get four shots off, three of which were blocked and one that missed wide.

In net, McLeod made 17 saves on her way to her first collegiate shut out. The Sharks finished the game with five blocked shots, led by Johnsson who had two. LIU successfully killed all six of the Purple Knights' power play opportunities.

Abby Latorella finished with a team-best four shots on goal. Bouveur, Carrigan Umpherville, and Paula Bergström all finished with three shots on goal, while af Bjur, Johnsson, Stella Scott, Morgan Schauer, and Renee Hoffmann all finished with two shots on target. McKay and Grace Dima finished with one shot on net.

The Sharks are back in action next Friday, January 24 when they visit Sacred Heart for another New England Women's Hockey Alliance matchup. Game time at the Sports Center of Connecticut is slated for 4:00 p.m.
