BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Long Island University men's basketball team (4-8) fell to Saint Peter's in a Sunday afternoon matinee at the Barclays Center, 69-58. The Peacocks shot 46.6 percent from the field in the win, while LIU was led by senior
Raiquan Clark's double double, as he had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior
Ashtyn Bradley also scored in double digits for the Sharks with 11 points.
GAME BREAKDOWN
LIU jumped out to an early lead, riding high from Friday's win. Back-to-back jumpers from seniors
Jashaun Agosto and
Julian Batts would put the Sharks on top, 9-3. But the Peacocks would come battling back, and eventually closed the lead to just one point, 15-14 with 12:16 left in the first half. Clark and Bradley would hit two threes as a part of a 7-0 run by LIU that gave the team its widest lead of the game, 24-16 with 8:44 on the clock. But SPU kept battling, and had a 7-2 run that cut the gap back down to three, 26-23. Within striking distance, all it took for the Peacocks was two jumpers in the final minute of the half for the visiting team to take the lead at the break, 33-32.
In the second half, the Peacocks opened the period on an 11-5 run, giving them a 44-37 advantage. Though LIU would claw their way back repeatedly, the damage was done, and the Sharks could never quite get the momentum needed to stem SPU's scoring spree.
The Sharks would come within six in the final seven minutes, with two straight jumpers from
Jermaine Jackson Jr. and
Ty Flowers, to make it 58-52 with 7:32 to play, but a 9-1 run in the final five minutes put the control of the game firmly in the hands of SPU, 67-53. The Peacocks would take the win at Barclays Center, 69-58, to move to 3-5 on the season.
