EMMITSBURG, Md. – An early second-half goal by the Mountaineers proved to be the difference as the Long Island University men's soccer team fell by a 1-0 margin to Mount St. Mary's University in its penultimate regular-season contest on Sunday, Nov. 3.
The setback was the first loss for LIU since Oct. 11 when it fell to Merrimack College. The Sharks currently remain in sole possession of the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Conference standings, and will need a victory against Saint Francis College next weekend coupled with a Saint Francis University loss or tie to Robert Morris University to earn the No. 1 seed for the conference championship.
LIU held an 11-10 advantage in shot attempts and a 4-3 lead in shots on goal for the match. The Sharks also garnered five corner kicks to just one for The Mount, but a 49th minute goal by Yann Kouemi was the difference maker.
Freshman
Keanu Tuart led the Blue and Gold with four shot attempts and two shots on goal, while senior
Kyle Parish and freshman
Nicholas Botis tallied two attempts each with one finding the target. Freshman
Demetri Skoumbakis made two saves in goal.
LIU will host the Terriers in its crucial NEC matchup next Sunday, Nov. 10 with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m.
