SHARKS WIN! Baseball Downs Hofstra, 8-4

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – LIU baseball traveled to Hofstra on Sunday, taking down the Pride, 8-4. With the win, the Sharks move to 5-6 on the season. For the third straight game, the Shark offense amassed nine hits as a team.
            
SHARK BITES
  • EJ Exposito cranked a solo homerun, his first of the season, to right center field in the top of the first to give LIU an early 1-0 lead.
  • Hofstra would score two runs in the bottom half and a run in the third to take a 3-1 advantage.
  • The Sharks offense exploded in the top of the sixth, tagging five runs on the board. Giovanni Ciaccio walked with the bases loaded to score Jack Power, bringing the deficit to one run. Christopher Wasson would later single to right field, scoring Michael Edelman, knotting the game up at three apiece.
  • Colin Adams got hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded to score Exposito to regain the lead for LIU at 4-3. Carlton Harper would drive in Wasson and Ciaccio to put an exclamation point on the inning, heading to the home half with a 6-3 lead.
  • Hofstra added a run in the eighth to trim the Shark lead to 6-4.
  • In the ninth, Edelman added two insurance runs on a two-RBI single, scoring Seth Surrett and Myles Proctor, stretching the score to 8-4.
  • The Pride had two men on base with two outs in the ninth, but Josh Gainer forced a popout to third base to seal the victory.
  • Exposito finished 3-4 with a homerun, two runs, and an RBI. Harper also notched two hits in as many at-bats off the bench.
  • Chris Buehler started the contest for LIU, going four innings, but Ryan Neuweiler earned his first win of the year after hurling three innings out of the bullpen, allowing one hit, no runs, and punching out two batters. 
  • Gainer earned his second save of the season with two innings of work and two strikeouts, giving up an earned run.
  • Up next, LIU will travel to Stony Brook to face the Seawolves on Tuesday, March 8 at 12:00 p.m.
