Lincroft, N.J.-The Long Island men’s and women’s cross country teams will open their 2010 season on Saturday at the Monmouth XC Invite in Lincroft, N.J. The gun goes off at 9:15 a.m. for the women and 9:45 a.m. for the men.

On the women’s side, coach Julia Sandiford looks for her team to improve off their ninth place finish in last year’s Northeast Conference Championships. Senior Robin Renahan is returning as the top finisher for the Blackbirds in that meet last year. Supporting Renahan will be fellow senior Desiree Conley and junior Emily Rosario.

On the men’s side, Long Island welcomes back the 2009 NEC Individual Champion, sophomore Rogers Kipruto. Kipruto outran last year’s field by over 20 seconds, and he picked up NEC Outstanding Performer and Freshman of the Year honors.

At last year’s race, Renahan finished in 44th place with a time of 17:15, followed by Conley at 17:44. For the men, senior Julius Mutekanga led the squad with a 26th place finish and a time of 20:24.

The teams will race in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Sept. 11 at the Fordham Fiasco.
