Brooklyn, N.Y. - A pair of Long Island University baseball players were included on Perfect Game’s list of the top 25 prospects to play in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League this summer. Sophomore pitcher
Justin Topa was ranked No. 8 and junior catcher
Tyler Jones was ranked No. 23 by PG Crosschecker’s Allan Simpson.
Topa, who pitched for the Southampton Breakers, impressed in his first season at Long Island. He compiled a 6-6 record with a 4.67 ERA for the Blackbirds, striking out 66 batters against just 15 walks. In 16 appearances, 12 of which were starts, Topa threw five complete games. He was named Akadema/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week three times. In five appearances for the Breakers (three starts), Topa had a 3.09 ERA, going 0-1. He struck out nine in 11 2/3 innings.
Jones, his battery mate, played for the Lehigh Valley Catz. He batted .323 with six doubles, a triple, three home runs, 25 RBIs and 18 runs in 27 ACBL games. Last season for Long Island, Jones hit .302 with nine doubles, a triple and five home runs. Jones drove in 33 runs and scored 31 more.
