Box Score
Waipahu, Hawaii – Sophomore
Nikki Labo scored for Long Island University, but it was not enough to overcome Cal Poly as LIU fell, 2-1, in the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi on Saturday night at Waipi‘o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Whitney Sisler scored a goal on each side of halftime to lead the Mustangs to the tournament title. The Blackbirds fell to 1-1 on the season.
LIU opened the game strong collecting six shots in the opening half-hour, but it was unable to take a lead. Sisler entered the game midway through the opening half and did not take long to make her mark on the contest when she collected a deflected ball off a corner kick and put her shot home to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead at the 32:21 mark.
The Blackbirds answered almost immediately when junior
Jessica Roelant sent a cross into the box and Labo settled it and put a shot into the lower left corner to knot it at 1-1 just 34 seconds later.
Cal Poly (2-1) pressured the LIU defense to open the second half and broke through for the eventual game-winner in the 55th minute when Monica Hemenez slipped a pass through the defense for Sisler who sent her shot into the lower left corner for a 2-1 lead. Hemenez nearly added to the lead four minutes later, but her shot went off the crossbar.
Long Island’s offense pressed for the equalizer, but Johanna Pfeiffer made a save on senior
Caitlin Meadows’ shot with 12:25 left in the game.
Sophomore
Jennifer Bannon made three saves for LIU, while Pfeiffer finished the night with four stops. LIU held a 15-14 margin in shots, but Cal Poly had five corner kicks to none for LIU.
The Blackbirds close out play at the No Ka Oi on Sunday night against Hawaii.
