Brooklyn, N.Y. – Chelsea Martinson of the Long Island University softball team was named to the
Jewish Sports Review softball All-America First Team. Martinson started all 57 games as a senior and led the Blackbirds to a program-record 39 wins in advancing to the regional final at the NCAA Tournament.
Martinson, a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Northeast Region Second Team honoree, enjoyed a career-year offensively for LIU setting personal-bests in several categories. She earned All-Northeast Conference First Team selection after setting personal marks in batting average (.313), runs scored (30), runs batted in (23) and stolen bases, going a team-best 12-for-12 on steal attempts.
Martinson capped her career by helping LIU advance to the Amherst Regional Final at the NCAA Tournament, marking a first in the program’s history. In addition to posting a single-season high 39 wins, Martinson was part of a senior class that accumulated a program-best 140 wins during their four-year run.
The Blackbirds posted a pair of wins over top-25 teams during the 2010 campaign en route to a 39-18 record. LIU went 17-3 against NEC opponents during the regular-season before claiming its fourth conference crown in five seasons to earn an automatic trip to the NCAA Tournament.
