Emmitsburg, Md. – The Long Island University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams both finished second in the Northeast Conference Championships on Sunday in Emmitsburg, Md. On the men’s side, freshman
Brian Richards was named Most Outstanding Rookie Performer as the Blackbirds won seven events overall, but couldn’t eclipse eventual champion Monmouth. Sophomore
Jessie Gaines, who was named both Most Valuable and Most Outstanding Track Performer, led the women’s team with three individual wins but Monmouth also was crowned NEC champion on the women’s side.
The men’s team nearly swept the individual sprint events, collecting first-place finishes in the 100- and 400-meter dashes and a second in the 200-meter event. Sophomore
Nickolei Mahlung blazed to a time of 10.68, narrowly edging Mount St. Mary’s Chadwich Brown for the title in the 100-meter dash. Junior
Samuel Egadu led a 1-2-3 finish for LIU in the 400-meter dash with his time of 47.74. Coming in second was senior
Sheldon Goffe with his time of 48.00 followed by classmate
Julius Mutekanga who turned in a time of 48.03.
Mutekanga lapped the field in the 800-meter run after crossing the line in 1:51.04, over 2.5 seconds in front of the second-place finisher. Richards grabbed second in the 200-meter dash with his time of 21.71 as Egadu followed in fifth at 21.99. In the 1,500-meter race, graduate student
Jason Lakritz nearly took gold with his second-place time of 4:00.54. Senior
Eric Tyler also tallied a second-place showing when he posted a time of 52.62 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Long Island’s team of sophomore
Robert Barnes, freshman
Miles Lewis, Mahlung and Richards edged out Monmouth for the 4x100-meter relay title in 40.94. The Blackbirds also won the 4x400-meter crown when the team of Goffe, Tyler, Barnes and junior
Elmo Neckles paced the field with a time of 3:15.32.
LIU was prolific in the jump events, collecting points in all three. Sophomore
Amire Solomon was victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 14.55 meters. Richards, who broke Long Island's all-time record in the event a week ago, leapt to a distance of 7.50 meters to win the long jump. Junior
Corryl Boyd grabbed sixth in the event with a measure of 7.24 meters. In the high jump, sophomore
Adham Conaway took eighth in when he cleared the bar at 1.89 meters.
Gaines earned the long jump title with a leap of 5.82 meters, just .17 meters ahead of SFNY's Dominique Burrus. Junior
Danay Spencer took home gold in the triple jump with a leap of 12.26 meters as Gaines came in third after achieving a distance of 11.95 meters.
Gaines led a 1-4-5 finish for the Blackbirds in the 100-meter dash, setting a meet-record with a time of 11.86. Sophomore
Torrie Saunders grabbed fourth in a time of 12.22 and freshman
Amber Mitchell was fifth after crossing the line in 12.30. In the 200-meter dash, Gaines snagged fourth and Saunders fifth with times of 25.41 and 25.61, respectively. Gaines and Saunders went 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles as well, tallying times of 14.35 and 14.67.
Senior
Selina Munoz finished her NEC career with a victory in the 800-meter dash. Munoz finished nearly two seconds ahead of the field in a time of 2:13.24. Junior
Christine Jones took second in the 400-meter dash after posting a time of 56.50. In the 400-meter hurdle event, freshman
Tricia Beckles placed third with a time of 1:03.38.
Freshman
Jazmin Waller ran the opening leg of the women’s 4x100-meter relay in which the Blackbirds took second place. The team was rounded out with Gaines, Saunders and Mitchell, as LIU finished just .30 seconds behind Mount St. Mary’s for the title. Long Island's 4x400-meter team also snagged second with a time 3:50.05. Waller took third in the high jump with a leap of 1.64 meters.
