Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Long Island University women’s basketball team has struck up a partnership with Girls for Gender Equity in a community outreach effort, hosting a series of clinics in local Brooklyn schools. From April 14 to May 4, the Blackbirds have taught fundamental basketball skills and concepts to elementary and middle school aged children.

Each of the one-hour clinics, which were instructed by Long Island players and coaches, focused on ballhandling, passing, shooting and defense among other skills. The inclusion of Blackbirds players provided the youth in the community with positive female role models in athletics. The coaches and players also conducted question and answer segments covering topics such as leadership, the importance of school and hard work in both on the court and in the classroom.

Girls for Gender Equity is committed to improving the physical, psychological, social and economic development of girls and women. Through education, organizing and physical fitness, Girls for Gender Equity encourages communities to remove barriers and create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives.
