Brooklyn, N.Y. - Long Island University women’s basketball head coach Gail Strielger announced that Nicole Lentini has signed a National Letter-of-Intent and will join the Blackbirds for the 2010-11 season. Lentini will be a welcome addition to an impressive recruiting class that already includes Justine Perry, Cleandra Roberts and Desiree Simmons.
Lentini, a 5-foot-8 shooting guard from Hazlet, N.J., comes to Long Island from Raritan High School. She averaged 11.7 points per game over her four-year career, totaling 890 points and 124 three-pointers. As a senior, Lentini scored a career-high 411 points for an average of 20.6 per contest. She converted 41 percent of her attempts from three-point land throughout her career.
“Nikki is a prolific scorer, especially from the outside,” Striegler said. “She’s a quality individual who will definitely fit in with our team and we’re really excited to have her. Nikki will definitely open up our inside play because she’s such an outside threat.”
Lentini has won several awards for her play at Raritan. She was named first team all-division and all-county, in addition to receiving Third Team All-Shore accolades. Lentini also garnered a spot on the all-tournament team at the WOBM Christmas Classic.
Long Island went 22-10, finishing second in the league, during the 2009-10 campaign and advanced to the Northeast Conference championship game.
