Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Long Island University women’s lacrosse was unable to overcome a slow start and had its two-game win streak snapped with a 15-11 loss to Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon at LIU Field. The Blackbirds never led in the contest and fell to 3-11 on the season, while the Jaspers improved to 2-10. Junior
Annie Kalata led LIU with three goals.
Manhattan jumped out to a two-goal lead in the early going on scores by Phelicia VanOverbeke and Tara Convery in the opening 2:16. The Blackbirds cut the deficit in half with an unassisted goal by Kalata at 24:51, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way. Chrissy Gutenberger and Julia Lavelle scored the next two Jaspers goals and also set each other’s goals up to extend the lead to 4-1.

Claire Ranney took a pass from senior
Christie Wienckowski to make it 4-2. Gutenberger answered with back-to-back goals within eight seconds of each other to make it 6-2 before junior
Sara LaNoir took a pass from senior Kristina Scheerer to get a goal back for LIU. Gutenberger continued to cause headaches for the LIU defense by adding another goal and assist before halftime. Wienckowski converted a free position shot to make it 8-4 at the intermission.
Manhattan continued to click offensively, scoring three goals in the opening five minutes of the second half to make it 10-4. LIU got a pair of goals back when Scheerer and Wienckowski made it 11-6 with 22:58 to play. Julia Lavelle tacked on two goals for the Jaspers, which were sandwiched around a Maricondo score.
LIU mounted a late rally that started with consecutive goals by Kalata that made it 13-9 with 14:47 to play. Maricondo cut the deficit to three goals after making a long solo run with 7:55 to play. The Jaspers managed to put the game out of reach with goals from Elizabeth Dugan and Caralyn Hickey before freshman
Caitlin Farrell was able to score for LIU off a pass from junior
Jenna Schauder with 39 seconds to play for the final margin.
Sophomore
Jacqueline Simonian made 20 saves as the Blackbirds were outshot, 51-29. Scheerer led LIU with four ground balls, while Maricondo and Ranney each had two caused turnovers. Maricondo, Schauder and Wienckowski each had two draw controls.
Gutenberger finished with five goals and three assists to lead the Jaspers. Keri Morris had six ground balls and forced three turnovers. Julia DiBernardo made six saves.
LIU wraps up the regular season this weekend, beginning with a Northeast Conference contest against Monmouth on Friday, April 16, at LIU Field.
