Box Score
Winter Haven, Fla. - Dartmouth scored 14 unanswered runs to hand the Long Island University baseball team its 10th straight loss as the Blackbirds fell, 14-2, at Chain of Lakes Stadium. Freshman
Tito Marrero drove in one of the two Long Island runs with a double.
The Blackbirds (1-11) led 2-0 after two innings but Long Island starter
Matt McCormick found trouble in the bottom of the frame. The Big Green put up the first of three big innings, getting to McCormick for four runs to take the lead for good. With one out and a runner on first, Jason Brooks hit a ball to left field that was dropped by senior
Chris Kievit for a two-base error. After a four-pitch walk to Brandon Parks, David Turnbull hit a sharp grounder to third base where
Drew Walsh made a diving grab but had no play, scoring a run to make it 2-1.
A bizarre play knotted the game for Dartmouth when Jake Carlson singled to the gap and Brooks scored. Parks moved to third and stopped there, but Turnbull mistakenly tried to go from first to third. To complicate things, Carlson was headed for second and the throw from the outfield narrowly missed getting him out. Second baseman
Gerard Tingos fired to third to Walsh, who tagged Turnbull for the second out. With the Blackbirds unable to get two outs on the wacky play, the inning continued and McCormick gave up a two-run single to Ennis Coble to put Dartmouth ahead for good.
The Big Green chased McCorkmick in the middle of the fourth, when they scored four more times. Dartmouth added five more runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth. McCormick (0-2) was charged with eight runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks in three-plus innings.
The Blackbirds used small ball to take a 2-0 lead, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. In the first, Tingos drove the second pitch of the game into right center for a double. After a sacrifice bunt by centerfielder
Sam Sciamarelli moved him to third, catcher
Tyler Jones drove Tingos in with a double over centerfielder Jake Carlson’s head/
In the second inning, shortstop
Greg DeSantis reached base on an error and Marrero came up with the intent to bunt him over to second. After Marrero found himself in a two-strike count, he laced a double to the gap in left-center to put Long Island up 2-0.
Kyle Hendricks (1-1) earned the win for the Big Green, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out 11.
Long Island will wrap up its spring break trip to Florida with a game against NJIT on Saturday, March 20. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
