Women's Lacrosse Defeats Liberty for Season's First Win, 19-9

, Fla. – Junior Jenna Schauder tallied five goals to help the Long Island University women's lacrosse team down Liberty by a 19-9 score at Veterans Park on Sunday night. The Blackbirds jumped out to a four-goal lead and never looked back en route to improving to 1-4 on the season.

LIU got on the board first at the 25:53 mark when senior Christie Wienckowski converted a free-position shot. Sophomore Claire Ranney extended the lead with back-to-back goals just 57 seconds apart to make it 3-0 just under seven minutes into the game. Junior Annie Kalata made it 4-0 on an unassisted goal at the 16:35 mark.
 
Liberty (1-2) got on the board with a goal from Karen Yates. LIU answered with a goal free-position shot from junior Sara LaNoir, but the Flames came back 16 seconds later with a goal to make it 5-2 at the 15:25 mark.
 
The Blackbirds followed with four unanswered goals to build a comfortable lead before halftime. Freshman Caitlin Farrell started the run and Wienckowski followed with her second of the day Senior Kristina Scheerer took a pass from Schauder to make it 8-2, before LaNoir closed the run with an unassisted goal.
 
The Flames interrupted the run with a goal by Lauren See, before senior Jillian Maricondo tacked on a goal for the Blackbirds with 1:48 left in the period. See gave Liberty some momentum heading into halftime with two goals in the final 22 seconds to make it 10-5.
 
Ranney and Schauder opened the second half with consecutive goals for LIU to make it 12-5 before Amanda Hornick tallied a goal for the Flames. Maricondo scored the first of three straight goals for Long Island to push the lead to nine goals. Wienckowski scored off a pass from sophomore Amber Meek, before Scheerer's second of the day made it 15-6 with 13:59 to play.
 
Liberty scored three of the next four goals, with a score by Schauder splitting up the run before she closed out the contest with three straight tallies for LIU to account for the final margin.
 
Wienckowski added a team-high seven ground balls, while sophomore Jacqueline Simonian added five and Schauder collected four. Maricondo, Schauder and Meek each had four draw controls, while Simonian turned away 10 shots to lift the Blackbirds to the win.
 
See led the Flames with three goals, while Kristin Crowley picked up five ground balls. Rebekah Luetters made 11 saves in goal.
 
Long Island held a decisive, 45-22, margin in shots and a 24-7 edge in draw controls. The Blackbirds were also 5-of-7 on free-position shots, while Liberty was 0-for-6.
 
LIU is back in action on Tuesday, March 16, with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Jacksonville University at the Ashley Sports Complex.
