Clearwater, Fla. – The Long Island University softball team fell to Drake, 4-0, in LIU’s final game at the USF-Under Armour Showcase on Friday in Clearwater, Fla. Sophomore hurler
Sarah Reynolds struck out four opposing batters in the contest and held the Bulldogs to only four hits in seven innings. The Blackbirds now stand at 7-10 on the year.
Drake took control of the game in the top of the third. Following two walks, a passed ball moved both Bulldog runners into scoring position. Lindsey Vande Wall singled in Carrie Hatfield for the game’s first run and Elena Leon would follow by scoring on an error to give Drake a 2-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs then put the contest away in the sixth when Erin Mollohan homered to center field with a runner on to take a 4-0 lead. Long Island was unable to recover from each Drake rally as the Blackbirds didn’t advance a runner past second the entire contest.
Reynolds held Drake in check for the first two frames. The Reading, Pa., product retired the first seven batters of the game including a string of six consecutive ground ball outs. Reynolds benefited from solid defense in the outfield including a diving catch by senior
Chelsea Martinson to save a home run in the fifth inning.
Both the Bulldogs and Blackbirds tallied four hits but LIU was again plagued by its inability to advance runners. The Blackbirds stranded eight base runners making it the third straight contest in which they’ve done so.
The Blackbirds will take on Indiana on Monday in Clearwater, Fla. The game is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
