Former Blackbirds Pitcher Climbs Mt. Kilamanjaro

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Former LIU hurler, Dan Messina, recently climbed the tallest summit in Africa, Mount Kilamanjaro. Messina pitched for the Blackbirds in 1978-79 and is currently the chief operating officer at CentraState Healthcare System in Freehold, N.J.

In two seasons for Long Island, Messina compiled a 2-1 record with a 4.20 earned run average in 11 appearances. He strucke out 20 batters over 34.1 innings as a relief pitcher. Messina came to LIU from New Dorp High School on Staten Island. He also spent two seasons at Staten Island Community College.
