Blackbirds Wrap Up Series with Loss to Canisius

Kannapolis, N.C. - The Long Island University baseball team wrapped up its season-opening, neutral-site series with an 11-5 loss to Canisius. The defeat dropped the Blackbirds to 1-3 to start the 2010 campaign.
Long Island led 5-1 after the second inning but the Golden Griffins scored three runs in the third and three more in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Freshman reliever
Luke Hammond (0-1) was saddled with the loss. Sophomore
Tyler Jones had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4. Classmate
Drew Walsh was 1-for-4, accounting for most of Long Island's offense with a grand slam.
The Blackbirds will return to action on Friday, March 5 with a trip to Blacksburg, Va. to take on Virginia Tech. The first of a four-game series begins at 3:00 p.m.
