Topa Earns First Win as Blackbirds Split Doubleheader with Canisius

Kannapolis, N.C. - The Long Island University baseball team split a pair of seven-inning games with Canisius at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, taking the first game by a score of 8-3 before falling 3-0 in the nightcap. Freshman
Justin Topa earned his first collegiate victory in game one.
Topa threw five innings, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out two en route to the win. Fellow freshman
Evan Zerff recorded a save with 1 2/3 innings of work as the Blackbirds captured their first win of the season.
The 3-0 loss in the second game dropped Long Island’s record to 1-2 while the Golden Griffins improved to 5-2. Junior
Adam Sauter was on the hook in game two, giving up three runs over five innings. He allowed five hits and three walks. Canisius plated a run on a groundout in the second inning and two more in the third. After three straight singles, Sauter walked in a run and allowed another to score on a fielder’s choice.
Long Island will wrap up its four-game series with Canisius on Sunday, Feb. 28. First pitch is slated for noon.
