Baseball Drops Season Opener to Canisius, 6-3

The Long Island University baseball team opened the 2010 season with a 6-3 loss to Canisius at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. Senior Kenny Cedel took the loss, allowing three unearned runs over five innings. 

The Blackbirds, the visitors in a neutral-site game at the home of the Kannapolis Intimidators, took a 1-0 lead in the first when second baseman Gerard TIngos led off with a single and centerfielder Sam Sciamarelli followed suit. After a one-out walk to shortstop Greg DeSantis, catcher Tyler Jones grounded into a fielder's choice to plate the first run of the season for the Blackbirds.

Cedel (0-1) ran into trouble in the third, allowing three runs. The lefty fanned five over five innings and gave up just one walk.

Freshman Chris Franzese gave up a pair of runs in relief, while the Golden Griffins (4-1) got to junior Paul Lopez for another run.

Long Island (0-1) scored a pair of runs in the eighth on a single by rightfielder Drew Walsh and a sacrifice fly by third basemen Derek Stupski#.

Tingos went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Sciamarelli finished 2-for-4.

The Blackbirds will continue their series with Canisius on Saturday, Feb. 26 with a doubleheader. The first of two seven-inning game will begin at noon.
