Women's Lacrosse Duo Earn IWLCA Academic Recognition

Brooklyn, N.Y. – A pair of Long Island University women’s lacrosse student-athletes earned recognition for their scholastic achievements as part of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Squad. Graduated senior Allison Funk and returning senior Christie Wienckowski were both among 407 student-athletes recognized.
 
To be considered student-athletes were nominated by their institutions and had to have attained at least junior standing academically. Nominees had to maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average or be among the top 10 percent of their squad.
 
Included in the list of honorees were the IWLCA Scholar-Athletes of the Year: Anna Ford from Elizabethtown College, Julie Kraus from Southern New Hampshire University, and Kristin Schwab from Princeton University.
 
The academic honor is the latest for the Blackbirds who were also honored as an IWLCA Academic Squad after posting a 3.30 GPA as a team for 2008-09. Funk and Wienckowski were also joined by, Sara LaNoir, Ashley Prizio, Kristina Scheerer and Jacqueline Simonian on the the Northeast Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll by earning at least a 3.20 GPA. Wienckowski represented LIU on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll by posting a 3.75 GPA.
 
The Blackbirds will participate in the inaugural Nick Colleluori Women's Lacrosse Classic at Hofstra University on Sept. 26 as part of the fall season.
