Brooklyn
, N.Y. – The Long Island University men’s and women’s soccer teams were awarded National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Awards for the 2008-09 year. LIU was one of just 97 schools to have both its men’s and women’s teams honored after posting a 3.0 grade point average or better as a team.

The Blackbirds’ men’s team posted a 3.44 GPA in 2008-09, which ranked second nationally in grade point average. Under head coach TJ Kostecky LIU has been honored by the NSCAA five times for its academic success, including the nation’s highest team GPA in 2003. The 2008 Blackbirds earned the Northeast Conference Team Academic Award for the highest GPA among men’s soccer teams in the league.

Head coach Tracey Bartholomew oversaw her women’s soccer team register a 3.30 GPA in 2008-09. This marks the eighth straight year that LIU’s women’s team has posted at least a 3.30 GPA. Overall, the Blackbirds have been honored a total of nine times by the NSCAA for their academic success.

The academic success of LIU’s soccer teams was spotlighted on the NSCAA Game of the Week broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel on Nov. 13 and will be available on the NSCAA YouTube channel.

A total of 568 (141 men, 327 women) squads were honored by the NSCAA.
