Brooklyn, N.Y.
– Freshman forward Jakeem Johnson of the Long Island University men’s soccer team was named to the All-Northeast Conference Second Team as announced by the league office on Thursday. Johnson’s 10 goals on the season was second in the NEC and led the Blackbirds.

The Upper Montclair, N.J., native was an offensive force the Blackbirds all season as he led the team with 22 points, good for third in the conference. Johnson appeared in 17 of the 18 contests while starting 11 in the forward position.

Johnson tallied one goal in his first four collegiate contests before breaking out by tallying four goals in a two game span from Sept. 16-25. The freshman broke a 1-1 tie in overtime with his second goal of the game to give Long Island a dramatic win over Stony Brook on Sept. 16 and followed that performance with a two-goal effort at Manhattan on Sept. 25.

Johnson’s three game-winning goals, including another overtime winner over Central Connecticut State on Oct. 25, led Long Island. His 10 tallies were the most for a Blackbird since Oskar Tilly scored 12 goals in 2002. Johnson is the second consecutive LIU forward to earn All-NEC Second Team honors after Jukka Lehto was honored last season.
