Men's Soccer Upended by Sacred Heart in Overtime, 2-1

– The Long Island University men’s soccer team was downed by Sacred Heart in overtime, 2-1, on Sunday on LIU Field in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Blackbirds fell to 6-11 and 3-6 in the Northeast Conference with the loss.
 
Sacred Heart broke the tie in the 94th minute when Marcello Castro snuck a shot past the Long Island defense to give the Pioneers the win.  The Blackbirds controlled play in the first half, taking a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute. Junior Juan Lanza led sophomore Steve Jakubowskion a breakaway down the left side. Jakubowski then found a streaking Jakeem Johnson in front of net to set up the freshman’s ninth goal of the year.
 
Prior to the tally, LIU had multiple scoring chances as freshman Elliot Kane and senior Adam Kelemet both ripped shots on goal that were saved by SHU goalkeeper Alex Fait. The Blackbirds had four shots on net in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper John Connolly stopped a Sacred Heart header from hitting the netting in the 28th minute.
 
LIU took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Pioneers edged the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute with a goal from Justin Brewer. Both teams battled in the second half, taking fives shots each. Connolly kept the Pioneers from taking a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute when he made a diving save off a shot from Brian Francolini. The Annapolis, Md., native had three saves for the contest.
 
The Blackbirds had a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks and outshot the Pioneers 15-9. Lanza led Long Island with five shots and Johnson added three shots on goal. There were no cautions in the contest and LIU had an 11-10 edge in fouls committed.
 
Before the game LIU seniors Kelemet, Dan Wrightand Emiliano Tramontozzi were honored. LIU will play its final regular season contest on Saturday, Nov. 7 when it travels cross-town to play St. Francis (N.Y.) in Brooklyn, N.Y.
