BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Freshman Ariana Calderon (Sacramento, Calif.) netted the game-winner in overtime to lift the Long Island University women’s soccer team past Binghamton, 1-0, on Friday night at LIU Field. Calderon’s unassisted effort improved the Blackbirds to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Bearcats dropped to 1-1-0.
Calderon scored the game-winner just 2:13 into overtime after she picked up the ball along the left wing and dribbled back towards the middle of the field before sending a high arching shot into the left corner, just above the hands of the Binghamton goalkeeper. It was her first career goal and gave LIU its first 2-0-0 in the program’s history.
The Blackbirds put up another strong defensive effort, as senior Amy Johnson (Maryland Heights, Mo.) and sophomore Christine DeLashmutt (Littleton, Colo.) combined for their second straight shutout. Johnson played the first half and made one save, while DeLashmutt made three saves in just over a half of play.
LIU held an 11-6 advantage in shots and narrowly missed opening the scoring in the second period on at least three occasions. The best of those chances came with just over eight minutes to play when sophomore Kayleigh Morgan (Harlow, England) took a shot from the top of the box that slipped through the goalkeeper’s hands, but was cleared away by a Bearcats defender before it could hit the back of the net.
The Blackbirds return to action on Sunday, Aug. 31, when they host Delaware State at 2:00 p.m. at LIU Field.
