The Long Island University baseball team defeated NJIT, 4-1, in its first game at the Palm Beach Challenge behind 7 2/3 innings from freshman Eric Hinkle (Ocean, N.J.). Sophomore James Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth inning.

Making his first collegiate start, Hinkle turned in a quality performance, allowing just one unearned run and striking out six. Fellow freshman John Slootmaker (Peaquannock, N.J.) came on in the eighth and induced a double play. Jones came on to pitch a perfect ninth and earn his first career save.

Sophomore Greg DeSantis (Bridgewater, N.J.) was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and senior Dan Pirillo (Marlboro, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with a double and a run.

Long Island (2-11) will continue play at the Palm Beach Challenge on Wednesday, March 19 against Cornell. The game is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
