Mike Byrd

Mike Byrd returns for his fourth year as the assistant coach for the LIU women's water polo program in 2023.

Byrd joined the LIU staff after spending six years coaching water polo at various levels.

His first head coaching position was with the Wellesley College women's collegiate club team, which he led to Club Nationals; he was named the North Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2012 for his efforts. Byrd also coached the Lincoln High (Ore.) women's water polo team, being named the Division Coach of the Year twice. While there, he also coached the Lake Oswego and Tualatin Hills water polo clubs. Byrd also served as the head coach for the Pacific Northwest's Cadet team as part of the USAWP Olympic Development Program for three years.
 
Originally from Modesto, Calif., Byrd was a first-team All-District and two-year captain and MVP for Modesto High, where he also was captain of the basketball team. He then attended and captained the men's water polo team at Harvard before graduating in 2008.

Byrd currently works as a strategist for a marketing agency and lives in Brooklyn with his wifee, Layla, son Emmett, and dog Phoebe.
